SEE YOUR PROPOSAL SHEET FOR SPECIFICATIONS AND QTY'S

Step one:

Getting started
A. Stand center column in the opening for the stair.
B. Slide treads (#4), pan face down (flat surface up), onto the column (#2) (FIG.3a). The treads are all the same.
C. Partially thread set screws into treads making sure to slide the landing on last. (FIG.3a & 3b)

Step two:

Installing the stair
A. Slide the landing (#6) over the center column (#2) to the desired finish floor height.
(If your stair has a wood overlay, lower the landing by the thickness of the wood overlay).
(see sheet 10 for addition wood instructions)
B. Using the lag screws (#21) supplied, attach the landing flush & level with the finish floor.
C. Plumb the center column (#2) and attach the base plate to the floor with anchors supplied.
D. Confirm the landing is level from finish floor to the column and tighten the set screws. (FIG. 3b)

Step three:

A. Starting with the top tread, place a baluster in the slot closest to the landing and attach the baluster to the tread with a ¼”x 1 ½” carriage bolt, nut and washer supplied (#10).
B. Make sure that the flange on the top of the baluster is facing away from the tread. (Fig. 4a)

Step four:

A. Align the top tread up to the proper riser height listed in your order.
If your tread has wood overlay, lower the tread by the thickness of the wood overlay, noted in your proposal order.
B. The riser height is measured from the top of the landing to the top of the tread below.
C. Next plumb your baluster and bolt it to the landing.
D. Then level the tread and tighten the set screws on the tread sleeve at the column.
(Always bolt balusters first then tighten the set screws on the tread sleeve last). (FIG. 5a)

Step five:

A. Slide the next tread up and follow the procedures in Step four. Continue this procedure with the remaining treads.
B. Slide shoe (#9) on to baluster (#8) and position baluster.
C. The last baluster only has one bolt. Plumb the last baluster and bolt to tread (#10).
D. Anchor to the floor by using the ¾” shoe (#9) and anchor bolts supplied later. (see FIG. 7a)
E.Your stair should look like (Fig. 5a)

Step six:

A. Placing hand rail: Insert the rail splice (detail 1), align the holes in the rail & insert set screws. Next lay your handrail on top of the balusters in a relaxed position as possible (aligning with the balusters). Make sure you leave enough overlap on both ends of the rail (top & bottom)(detail 2) to be trimmed off later.
B. Starting in the middle of the stair where the stair rail splices meet, drill a pilot hole with a 1/8" drill bit from underneath the baluster into the handrail, (Detail 3)
C. With a drill motor use a 3/8" socket/nut driver and install the self tapping fastener (#11) (making sure not to over tighten). (Detail 1) D. Follow the same procedure for the balance of
the balusters working your way to the top baluster.

At the ends of the stair rail (top & bottom) it may be necessary to open the stair rail if the radius is a little tight. (FIG. 7a) Fasten the bottom baluster last (on the first tread) making sure it is plumb. Anchor baluster (#8) to the floor by using the ¾" shoe (#9) and anchor bolts supplied. (see FIG. 7a)

Step seven

Cut the ends of the handrail approximately ½” away from the bottom and top baluster and insert plastic end caps (#20). (FIG. 7b)

Step eight:

Attaching the landing rail assembly or assemblies. (8a)
A. Place the landing rail assembly on the steel landing or wood overlay on the side/sides of the landing required by your proposal order.
B. Using the self drilling and tapping screws (#18) supplied, fasten the top of the landing rail assembly (#12) to the center column (#2) at the elevation specified from finish floor on the proposal order. Plumb and fasten the bottom of the rail assembly (#12) to column (#2). (do not over tighten the screws (#18)
C. After the landing rail assembly (#12) is attached to the column (#2),
1. Flush outside of post with steel landing,
2. Mark holes thru base on top of landing or wood,
3. Loosen screws (#18) enough to drill 5/16” holes (3 each) thru top of the landing and wood (see sheet 10 if applicable).
4. Bolt with carriage bolt supplied.
5. Retighten screws (#18).

Step Nine:

Installing the center balusters without wood treads. See sheet 10 for center baluster installation with wood tread.

A. Before you begin to install the center balusters, mark a line on the tread from the pre-drilled center baluster holes to the outer edge. Some treads require more balusters than others, depending on your proposal order.
B. Cutting center balusters to length:
1. Have someone hold the top of the center baluster (#14) center the baluster on stair rail, and with a measuring tape, make sure there is equal distance between the main balusters (#7 & #8) or (#7 & #7)
2. While one person holds the top of center baluster (#14), the other person holds the bottom of the bottom of the baluster centered on the line previously marked tread. (see A.)
3. Mark a line with a pencil across the face of the baluster at the top of the tread.
4. To allow for the bolting insert. (see 9C), subtract 3/16" inch from the line and cut.
C. Insert bolting insert.
D. Bolt bottom of baluster with 1/4" CS bolt.
E. Drill and anchor top of baluster to stair rail per detail 1, Step Six, C, (sheet 6).
F. This procedure also applies to center balusters (#15 & #16)

Wood landing and tread installation:

A. We suggest drilling the 5/16" holes prior to installation, 4 holes on steel landing and 3 holes on the steel tread. See layouts below.
(These can be drilled in place after installation, if you prefer)
